Lurk, lurk, lurk [Sep. 29th, 2008|08:14 pm]
I'm not really here often anymore, but I was getting tired of seeing my entry about Ginger and Nibbler every time I come by. I will now resume lurking again.

Cat vs. Hamster [Oct. 20th, 2007|09:18 pm]
I suppose that owning both a rodent and a feline could be one of the the sillier things that I have ever done, but oh well, it keeps life interesting.

So I had Nibbler the antisocial, vampirical, ancient dwarf hamster out on my bed a few days ago to give her a raisin. Ginger was no where to be seen and the last place I heard her was the living room. Now Ginger is not very well know for her ability to hunt, stalk, or jump, so I figured that there would be no problems.

Which there weren't, until I went to pick Nibbler up. Ginger, seeing her advantage, jumped onto the bed, ran past me and grabbed Nibble out of my hand with her teeth! Then she ran off, looking extremely pleased with herself. I tackled my cat as she ran out of the room and rescued the screaming hamster.

Luckily, Nibbler seems to be okay. She was not bleeding and it looked like her legs were fine. She took the whole experience quite well. I'll have to watch her over the next few days to make sure she is still doing well. Ginger is watching her too, but with a completely different intent.

I am so glad that I decided not to work at Kohl's. This semester has suddenly gotten very busy. Between classwork, my internships, my student org. activities, and my job on campus, I barely have time to exist. I get the distinct impression that I would have a mental breakdown if I had actually decided to work at Kohl's.

Musing [Sep. 9th, 2007|11:44 am]
My former happiness looks like misery when compared to my present happiness. It's funny how things can change like that.

Yay! [Sep. 5th, 2007|05:14 pm]
I now have a job! Unfortunately, it is at Kohl's, but a job is a job and they are starting me at a slightly higher salary. I start next Tuesday.

And in other good news, I will be getting my cat next weekend. I miss having a cat around and Ginger is a very friendly, affectionate cat, so we get along wonderfully. I will just have to teach her that Noel's guinea pigs are not food.

Also, I really like my classes this semester. My Politics and Media professor is awesome. He actually said "interwebs" in class when he was telling us about our class requirements. In addition, he started off the class by showing the M.C. Rove clip. Arabic will hard, but the language is fascinating. I have not been to my class on Islam yet, but I am sure that will be fun too. And, my internship is with CAP Services, which is a Central Wisconsin public service agency that I greatly admire.

Despite the almost constant rain and the stress of moving and cleaning, I have actually been very happy this past week. But with the way my life has been going lately, I am waiting for something nasty to rear it's head and ruin everything.

Moved [Aug. 21st, 2007|02:54 pm]
I do not want to move again for a very long time. Unfortunately, the way things look now, I will do this all over again in December.

But in slightly better news, my new apartment is clean and neat, everything is organized, and there is plenty of room for all of my stuff. The kitchen is a little small, but I can deal with that.

Just in case anyone is interested, here is my new address:
305 Michigan Ave., Apt. 7
Stevens Point, WI 54481

Harry Potter 7 [Jul. 22nd, 2007|10:42 am]
I finished Harry Potter & in seven hours yesterday, which I think is a fitting time.

The book turned out to be better than I expected. It did drag a bit in the beginning and there are a few bits of plot that were not completed (what happened to the Dursleys, were they ever killed or where they able to live out their lives after wards), but other than that, Rowling did an amazing job. I was amazed by how much that she included in the last last book. So many plot lines were tied up and I really loved that she involved all of these minor characters , like Griphook, that were seen from the beginning of the series, but just not regarded as important.

Aaaahhhhh!!! [Jul. 21st, 2007|12:04 am]
Note to self...Always think decisions over completely before saying yes. Otherwise, life sucks. (Please excuse the bluntness.)

(If interested, please ask. I will privately fill everyone in.)

Today at work, I was assigned the delightful task of retyping every page of a 25 page packet that our office uses to teach sexual harassment awareness. My biggest problem with this assignment is not the length, but that that I can not correct the grammar problems and the incorrect word usage problems. Here is the worst problem I found so far:

"Our mission is to discourage unacceptable sexual harassment." This is the first sentence in the packet.

I wonder what acceptable sexual harassment looks like...

The big announcement [Jun. 12th, 2007|12:59 pm]
Most of you have already heard this, but:

I am engaged!

The wedding date is tentatively set for Dec. 31, which is New Year's Eve. We will be having a wedding reception/New Year's Eve Party, hopefully with swing dancing.

I just wanted to put out an update of sorts.

I will be gone next week Tuesday through Sunday on a trip. I am going to Emory, Virginia with my boyfriend Scott and then on to Columbus, OH. Scott recently got a job in Emory, so we will be looking for a house in that area. After I graduate I plan to move down to Virginia with Scott. The criteria for a house includes a decent sized kitchen with a dishwasher and enough room for all of our books. Between the two of us, we have enough books to fill a public library and we are both constantly updating our libraries. We may need new bookshelves as well.  I guess the prefect house would be one with built-in bookshelves and space for some free-standing shelves.

Job Gripe [May. 21st, 2007|04:50 pm]
So I still don't know if I have job my on-campus for the summer. It seems that the Chancellor has taken a special interest in my employment and is taking her sweet time to figure out if I can stay or not. As of today, she is consulting other campus big-wigs about the decision.

How hard is it to decide if one student will be employed for one summer?

I'm done! [May. 16th, 2007|12:31 pm]
I am finally done with exams and this semester. My self-imposed exile from fun is over!

Of course the first thing to do is clean my room. Right now my floor is buried under a thick pile of books and notes. I am looking forwards being able to walk across my floor without navigating around the piles.

I still don't solidly have a job, but I'll deal with that as the problems come. I am just looking forwards to spending my summer with my friends and with Scott.

Jobs [May. 10th, 2007|02:46 pm]
Living this summer might be a little difficult. I am having huge amounts of trouble actually finding a job that I can reasonably handle.

Currently, I will be working on campus at my Equity and Affirmative action job, but I don't know how many hours I will be working and what I will be paid.

I will also be gardening for a lovely old lady, but she can't offer me very much money or very many hours.

I will also be working for my parents doing some odd jobs and photographing a few weddings.

While this all looks good, I don't think I will be earning enough money to survive through the summer. I need at least $1000 to pay rent and at least another $500 for food and other bills would be nice too. So, if anyone knows of any sweet old ladies who need a gardener or mother's who need a cake baker, let me know.

Yesterday, I needed to spend some time by my self and relax. Luckily, there is a nice set of hiking trails about 4 blocks north of my house, so I through myself into the woods and tromped around for a few hours.

I am always impressed by the sorts of things I can find when I just wander. During my three hour long meanderings, I followed the course of a small stream. The path's in the area don't follow the stream, so I just wandered up and down various ones until I encountered running water. Down one secluded path I found an almost naked sunbather. This was not the type of wildlife I hoped to see and it was actually quite a shock to encounter such a great expanse of naked flesh in the same area the intricate spiraling dance of two dragonflies. I will admit that the sunbather was more natural than I was. I was clothed, where as he was almost in a natural state (although I was glad he had the decency to cover up.)

In the same area as the sunbather, I also encountered some deer. Deer are dumb and boring. I had some fun seeing how close I could get with out them running away. The winning distance is somewhere around ten feet. Like I said, deer are dumb. I would get within ten feet of them, they would panic and run and stop about twenty feet away. This exercise can be repeated as many times as you want.

It is spring here in Wisconsin, which is a great relief. I was really starting to wonder if we would go directly from winter to another winter. With the increased temperatures, many creatures are returning to the area and it is mating season. As expected, I saw a very harassed looking female duck with her very determined male escort.

I also saw a number of snakes, which had to be my favorite part of the day. One of the snakes was a sunning itself on the pathway before I walked through. Snakes are shy by nature and this one understandably slithered away as approached. While I looked around to see what type it was, it nervously peered at me from the tall grass before it decided I was a really scary person. It was a large garter snake. The second snake I saw was also a garter snake. In case you are wondering this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thamnophis_sirtalis is a garter snake. Garter snakes are relatively harmless. Their bite might cause a little swelling, but their venom is not dangerous to humans. This is an important thing to note, because the second garter snake I saw was more aggressive. I sat down on the edge of an elevated walkway to look at it and the snake decided to attack my right shoe repeatedly. It looked scary, but I knew it was harmless. It's a good thing I know what I can and can not touch when I am outside here in Wisconsin. The snake eventually gave up and slithered away, frustrated that it could not kill or threaten my shoe.

I wish I would have encountered a grass snake out on my walk. Grass snakes: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/er/herps/snakes/smoothgreen.htm are harmless creatures. You can pick them up easily, they rarely bite (their mouths are too small), and the wrap them selves around your fingers so you can carry them easily.
